The SAJB was founded by St. Marks High alumnus Joe Dawson (upright/electric bass). Originally consisting of SMH alumni, the band has evolved to include 17 very talented tristate area musicians that excel at performing modern big band jazz. The band's focus is on performing challenging jazz arrangements written for some top contemporary big bands such as Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, Maynard Ferguson and John Fedchock's New York Big Band.
